Justification:

Concerns with Interdisciplinary Cognate:

* University only allows 6 units of upper division undergraduate course work to apply to cognate. Students are finding that prerequisite coursework and knowledge sufficient for graduate level study in other disciplines requires much more time and preparation.

* Convincing outside faculty that students will be sufficiently prepared for cognate research with limited coursework is difficult in some cases.

* Intensive study in outside disciplines, for which most students have little preparation, detracts from core music studies and impacts compositional productivity.

The proposed changes still allow for an Interdisciplinary Cognate, while also providing other options for students whose background and interest would best be served through a different course of action.  All other proposed cognates will consist entirely of graduate coursework and will therefore be at least as rigorous as the current plan.

An option of an Interdisciplinary Cognate which includes graduate music courses combined with graduate work in other fields is included (see footnote 3). Under this option, a student may pursue cognate research involving musicology or music education.

Performance cognate option: For some students with significant performance experience, performance studies while pursuing a doctorate will enable them to develop further as performers, and to incorporate instrumental/vocal/conducting studies into their compositional activity and dissertation.  Documented proficiency as a performer greatly enhances employment potential for composition applicants.

Musicology cognate option: Some academic positions require instruction in several academic areas, including composition, theory, and musicology. Students pursuing a musicology cognate would gain significant instruction at the graduate level and would engage in research which would inform future instruction as well as compositional and research interests.

[1] Students will enroll in private composition study (MUC 6930/7931) every semester.

[2] Students with an electroacoustic focus, or mixed acoustic/electroacoustic curriculum, will take the sequence MUC 6445, MUC 6446, MUC 7447

[3] Interdisciplinary Cognate consists of either 12-21 credits outside of music, with a maximum of 6 credits of upper-division (3000/4000 level) undergraduate coursework, or a combination of courses from music and external departments totaling 12-21 GRADUATE credits.

[4] Student must audition and be accepted into instrumental or conducting studio at graduate performance level.
